Full STEAM Ahead: Musical Success!

We need two Conair garment steamers to steam our spring musical costumes.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Pohl's classroom raised $248

This project is fully funded

About My Students

My students are talented young adults who dedicate their time before and after school to our spring musical. These musicians and actors work 10-15 hours a week after school preparing for this year's production of The Little Mermaid Jr. With such exquisite costumes to be used, one student suggested getting a garment steamer to make sure each performance has costumes displayed at their best. I suggested he take his thought and turn it into an action, and now he has written a proposal for two garment steamers to be used for our costumes in the spring musical.

My students will learn the responsibility of taking care of costumes and all of the behind-the-scenes work that is needed to make what happens on the stage look so wonderful. It is a full team effort between those who are in front of the lights and those who are working behind the curtains. My students are aged 11-14 and I have begun a teaching unit on all of the jobs that take place in theater; most of which are not seen! Costume detail is a very important job to have because all costumes must be organized and prepped properly for each performance. This garment steamer will help students easily prepare all costumes needed before each performance of our spring musical "The Little Mermaid Jr."

In Their Own Words

I work behind the scenes of the show and I am in charge of costumes this year. I noticed that my teacher does not have a garment steamer for the costumes and I think it would be a great tool to have. Our costumes are organized nicely in a small area of our green room which leads to items being squeezed into place. Often they come off the hangers wrinkled. I figured a steamer could solve this problem!

I will take it upon myself to read the instructions on how to appropriately use this item and will teach a few classmates on my team of costumes prep people how to use it. I am requesting two items so that we can do multiple costumes at a time. This will be a more efficient use of time.

This project is important to me and my school community because it will help a large group of students succeed at this year's musical. Our musical is where so many groups of students come together to make a successful show. We have students in our band play in the pit band, we have students work behind the scenes (like me and my friends) doing costumes, make-up, and props, and we also have students running the lights and microphones from the back of the auditorium. This musical is a culmination of all of these students working well together.
