Full STEAM Ahead: Maker Project

Help me give my students STEAM items, such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power building kits, at the short reach of their inquisitive little hands.

My Students

My students come from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, academic abilities, and loving families. They come to school to learn as much as they can within the limited time we have together. They strive for not only success in their current school year, but overall success towards their journey in to their college and careers. My students love to learn and are always asking for innovative ways to do so. Their inquiries in their academics are the fuel to my instructional models.

My Project

STEAM accessible materials, like solar powered reusable tin can cars, hydro powered energy projects, and structural engineering projects will allow my 5th grade students to bring to life what I am teaching them everyday in my Literature and Writing class. So far, this year we have read, researched, and written opinion essays about the New Horizon Mission to Pluto, now classified a "dwarf planet". Currently, we are reading and researching about alternate power sources in search of the renewable resource that is the answer for our future in clean energy. We are working through texts about hydroelectric power sources and wind turbine power. We are investigating how they work, the benefits they provide to the future of our renewable resource power sources, and the problems that exist in the current models that are creating power. Once our research is complete we will be writing Informational Articles for a Science magazine about how each source works, its benefits, and its problems. We will use the model kits to bring to life all we are learning about by creating live versions of them. Other teachers will be eager to find out what is going on in my highly engaged and energetic filled classroom as these students bring to life their own "alternate power sourced" objects, as we do not have a Makerspace available, or resources for students to tinker, build, and invent with. I look forward to the failures and successes we will experience, as we venture into building full functioning Maker Project products.
