Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in the heart of Houston, Texas. It was built in 1929 and has been deemed part of the Historic Heights, which means everything is original. Original is amazing, but original is also a little ancient. The ceiling of our classroom leaks, but we deal with it like pros. The wood floors are beautiful but are buckling due to the leaks. Honestly though, I can't complain. Having taught at a brand-new school before, I can tell you that the building does not make the school... The people do! I finally feel, after 10 years of teaching, that I have found my forever home.
"Everybody is a genius; but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid." -Albert Einstein
I am a true believer that all students have a talent, and it is our job as educators to discover it. Our students have inner-city struggles, but they perform like they have no worries in the world. School is a place where they can and will be successful, and a place where people believe in them.
My Project
Dictionaries are full of answers to many of life's quandaries. My students need answers and are willing to find them, but we have old, tattered dictionaries that are literally coming apart at the seams. I would love (and the students deserve) to have a new class set for them to use on the science STAAR test in May, but especially for daily use to increase their vocabulary skills. New dictionaries would not only be easier to use and in one piece, but less distracting to the other students in the classroom. After all, "the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. (Vince Lombardi)"
