Help me give my students snacks, drinks, and a refrigerator in which to store them. These items would allow my students to have a snack during the day so that they could focus on their work.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my class are from a low-income, high crime area. Many of them come from single-parent household and 100% of them qualify for free lunch. They face many difficulties in their personal lives which affect their performance at school.
Many students come to school hungry because they do not get breakfast at home and go home knowing they will be hungry because there may not be anything there to eat.
Students cannot concentrate and learn what I am trying to teach them in the classroom if they are concerned about when they will eat next. I want to be able to ease that concern while they are at school.
My Project
We start school at 7:30 in the morning and school ends at 2:30 in the afternoon. Students are provided free breakfast when they arrive in the morning and go to lunch at 10:50 in the morning. By the early afternoon, they are hungry again. Many of them do not know where their next meal will come from.
How can they concentrate on learning if they are thinking about their hungry belly?
The truth is.....they can't! I want to be able to provide a snack for them in the afternoon so that they can have a strong finish to the day! My students are always appreciative when I bring in a treat for them to nibble on while they are working. Having a ready supply of snacks would be a help to get them through the day. They would be able to focus on their learning and therefore be more successful.
