Full Bellies = Focused Brains

Help me give my students a variety of snacks to help them focus and black Sharpies to mark their reading charts.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade reading to students who struggle with basic reading comprehension. They give up an elective to be placed in a reading class. My five classes are made up of a range of students who read between first grade to just below grade level.

While they might prefer to be in a gym or art class, my students are good sports and work hard to improve their reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

When I find a good text, they are on board and ready to fly! They are kind and help one another improve their reading on a daily basis.

My Project

My students rely our classroom snacks to fill their bellies on days they've missed breakfast or lunch. The snacks can mean the difference between a focused learner or a head down on their desk.

My students earn tickets that allow them to buy snacks among other incentives.

Students must earn points through working on their online reading program, participating in classroom discussion, or reading out loud. It's also required to have at least a "B" average to use their tickets.

Students come in and make their selections before the bell, during recess, or at lunch. Often students will "buy" snacks for a friend if their friend is also hungry. It's really touching and sweet. The snack program has become a bit of a tradition within my program and kids look forward to taking our reading workshop.

After eating a snack, the kids either work in small groups on oral reading fluency or critical reading skills, or they read a novel together, developing and answering big questions. These struggling learners do so much better with a fun reward system that gives them a full belly and focused brain.
