This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come in and right away we get started on reading and math. The students are very engaged in hearing stories of others and being able to relate their own lives to those stories. My students work in small groups to be able to get help in the areas they need most. I work with special needs students who value learning in different ways. I work with students individually as well as in small groups to give them the tools they need to help them succeed both in life and in the general education curriculum.
I work in an inner-city school with 100% of students on free breakfast and free lunch.
My students value their education and soak up any information that is given to them and apply it in the real world. My school has a strong focus on reading and math, and we want students to succeed in their learning. Students are pushed to reach their highest ability daily. Many of the students appreciate all that is given to them and value the help that others give them.
My Project
My students come in daily striving to do their best. I have a prize box that they are allowed to get items from when they give 100% effort and great behavior. Many of my students go for the snacks and the food instead of the pencils, toys, etc. Many of my students will also ask if they can take it home with them and earn another prize for their siblings. I am asking for items that offer high protein that the students do not have to refrigerate to keep the food from spoiling. Protein bars, Pop-Tarts, meat sticks and fruit snacks will be great for students to bring home to give them energy. My students also love drinks such as water that they can have in the classroom or take home with them.
It is very upsetting as an educator to know that your students are going home hungry.
I do my best to try and provide food for my students, but over time it is very hard to find the funds to keep providing them with their next meal. By giving students food it will allow them to focus more on their academics rather than worrying about the issues that they have at home or how they are going to get their next meal.
