My Students

"Technology is the campfire in which we tell our stories." ~Laurie Anderson, Artist

My high school students range from grades nine through twelve fulfilling their fine arts elective by taking Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Theatre Arts.

Our student population is approximately 1,800 and even with the school size shrinking in half due to the opening of another high school within a five mile radius, we have managed to maintain our performing arts program. We have around 100 students involved in these classes, but all performances are open to the student body, faculty, and community stakeholders. Our theatre, dance, orchestra, choir, and band students perform on campus in our "Theatre" (three converted lecture halls once divided by accordion walls in the 1970s). All performances are run by the students under teacher supervision. Since so many groups utilize this facility, it is in the best interest of our student crew-members and performers to begin accessing behind the scene technology ASAP.

My Project

Our theatre arts students are the brains behind our theatrical performances, dance shows, visual and performing arts assemblies and more. In the beginning theatre arts, students learn about the duties of those behind the scenes because by their second semester of class they are running and operating productions on their own. Our stage manager, backstage managers, lighting technicians, sound technicians, house managers, set designers, costume designers, make-up designers, and publicity ensemble are all students. Our stage managers face the challenge of calling the appropriate cues when the stage is in black out. The night camera would be hung in the theatre to fool proof cues called once all performers are in places. The iPad will allow the Stage Manager to use a stage management application that is currently being used at the college level. The 3 mini iPads would used by our student designers for research and presentations. The protective cases will ensure future use.

These technical tools will ignite passion and stimulate the minds of young students by promoting creativity, professionalism, and organization while making them familiar with industry standards.
