This is a small school in rural Alaska where supplies are hard to come by and very expensive to ship! The students are smart, kind and eager to learn. All receive free breakfast and lunch due to the economic disadvantages in our town. The area is about a 64% Native Inupiaq population. Some have never left the state. We often have students transfer in and out from the smaller surrounding villages depending on the job market, season and their individual economic situation.
My Project
My students often need to be out of their seats and moving around the room but I expect them to keep working! We do a lot of co-operative and active work to get their bodies moving and to help them wake up- it's pretty dark in Alaska right now! While the students are moving, clipboards will help them keep their papers together and give them a hard surface to continue their work.
Also afternoons are tumultuous as blood sugar levels spike and drop after lunch and recess.
We need a healthy, nut-free snack, like beef jerky, to end the day successfully.
