My Students
I teach a diverse group of high school students, each of whom comes with his/her unique learning needs. Despite our differences, we are working together towards a common goal, to become lifelong learners, thinkers, and readers.
I am a reading teacher at a Title I school in Connecticut, where 100% of my students are reading three or more levels below their grade level.
While these students face many challenges in their lives, and many have experienced trauma, they work hard to become better versions of themselves. Many of them have the goal to be college and career ready but become easily discouraged. They realize they need to be literate individuals in order to achieve this, but it can be overwhelming at times. We are striving to work together to foster a positive learning environment that builds positive relationships, encourages improved student attendance, and a higher level of engagement.
My Project
My students often lack the basic needs to help them succeed in school: food, shelter, and sometimes a place to live. Often students will come in asking for food because they're hungry. Having snacks available will help alleviate their hunger, allowing them to focus on the task at hand: becoming better readers and writers. Being able to focus in school will help them be successful, not only in school but in the world when they graduate. My students are reading 3 or more grade levels below; they already have large obstacles to overcome. Please help me remove hunger as an obstacle to success.
