My students are sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in middle school special education. They are curious, athletic, funny, genuine, loving, and generous people who brighten my day. They also have numerous obstacles in their lives which can make learning more difficult: disabilities, both visible and invisible, poverty, hard family situations, and years of ongoing difficulties at school.
Really though, the students in my classroom aren't any different than you or I: they want to succeed.
Even though our school is over 50% low-income and sometimes known as "being on the wrong side of the tracks," we see some of the most remarkable kids come through our doors. Our school is in a rural setting and my kids have grown up being adventurous in the outdoors, in the woods, and playing in the nearby rivers. They help each other, they show integrity and respect, and they are thoughtful. However, my students need a little help catching up to their peers academically, and quality educational resources are a big key to their current and future success.
My students are like any other preteens and teenagers: they need to eat - a LOT! If the students don't get enough to eat at home, arrive to school too late for breakfast, or just need more food to fuel their growing brains and bodies, we want to provide things like beef jerky, fruit, trail mix, and granola bars so they can focus on learning. Hungry kids can't be focused and learning kids.
If chosen for funding, we would love to buy healthy and kid-approved snacks for our classroom.
Staff typically fund snacks from their own pockets, and we would really appreciate some extra financial support! Our kids (and their bellies) will thank you!
