Fueling Growth and Promoting Equity in School

Help me give my students ways to meet their needs physically and emotionally with a calming cozy chair, healthy snack options, putty, markers and colored pencils so that they may engage in academics and grow in confidence!

My Project

Working in a middle school as a school-based behavioral health counselor, I work with students from many different socio-economic backgrounds with varying degrees of access to different levels of support and resources. Families have struggled to keep up with the many changes in routine and procedures (in and out of school) throughout the years of COVID-19 and continuing into this school year as we are just beginning to perform as we have in the past and still finding consistency towards the end of this 2022-2023 school year; Many students come to school exhausted, hungry, and/or dysregulated and then must face normal day to day challenges as a middle schooler. It can be very difficult to focus in school if students have unmet needs like hunger, sleep, hydration, etc. Especially in the teenage years, it is very important to fuel their growing bodies. Snacks will go towards hungry students needing fuel during the day. Due to many changes over the years, and a lack of exposure to normal experiences they may have had, students are also playing catch up, learning to regulate their emotions, social-skills, and learning to cope with everyday stressors once again. It is crucial to get students’ needs met so that they may access the education available to them. The saucer chair will be used in our counselors' office as a comfy place to regulate emotions and practice coping skills. Fidgets such as the putty, stickers, and cube toys help students regulate their emotions/energy so that they may engage in classes. Markers and colored pencils are provided to students in need and for calming art activities during counseling groups. All of these tools would be utilized to promote and aid in equity across our already beautiful campus. Thank you for supporting growth and equity.
