My Project
I teach reading to a diverse group of middle schoolers in a high-needs, urban school. Many of my students are bilingual, and for many, English is not their first language. They are energetic, curious, and eager to learn when given the right tools. Unfortunately, access to high-interest nonfiction texts that are both age-appropriate and engaging is limited in our classroom. This project will bring in a wide range of books from the Who Was?, Where Is?, and What Was? series books that are perfect for middle school readers.
These nonfiction titles are accessible, visually engaging, and packed with fascinating information about historical figures, world landmarks, and important events.
Whether they’re learning about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Harriet Tubman, the Great Wall of China, or the attacks on 9/11, students will be building background knowledge and growing their reading skills at the same time.
These books offer a bridge between fiction and academic nonfiction, helping students boost comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence. I plan to use them for independent reading, small group projects, and research tasks.
Your support will help spark curiosity and build lifelong reading habits by giving my students access to books that are both educational and enjoyable. For many of them, these will be the first nonfiction books they read cover-to-cover—and the first time they see themselves as capable, curious readers.
