My Project
My 6th grade students are energetic, thoughtful, and eager to explore new ideas—especially through stories. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, and for many of them, reading is one of the most accessible ways to connect with big themes like justice, identity, and resilience. What makes them truly special is their curiosity and willingness to dive deep into books that challenge their thinking and broaden their worldview.
This project will provide 23 copies each of Catching Fire, Mockingjay, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes—the sequels and prequel to The Hunger Games.
We recently read The Hunger Games together as a class, and my students were captivated. They debated characters’ choices, questioned societal structures, and connected the fictional world of Panem to real-life history and current events. They are begging to read more.
These specific books will make a difference because they allow us to continue building on the excitement and momentum that The Hunger Games sparked. Each student having their own copy means we can read together, annotate, reference passages during discussion, and truly engage with the text as a shared experience—not just as individual readers.
Goals for this project include: Deepening reading comprehension and literary analysis skills; Encouraging empathy and critical thinking through complex themes and characters; Promoting a love of reading through high-interest, age-appropriate literature; Building confidence as readers by completing an entire book series together.
With your support, my students will not only continue their reading journey but also grow as thinkers, collaborators, and lifelong learners.
