Fueling a Life-Long Love of Reading!

My Students

I have a full classroom of fifth graders who are excited about learning and eager to do their best. They love collaborating with one another, taking on leadership roles, and experimenting within a safe and supportive environment. We have so much fun together!

In addition to their eagerness to learn, my students have great diversity in skills and needs.

I have students who function well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students who work well above grade level. Additionally, nearly half of my students are English language learners, and need various levels of support in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Finally, due to the pandemic, my fifth graders have not known a "regular" school year since they were in third grade. It's undeniable they have gaps in their foundations of reading and math. I am doing everything I can to help fill in these essential gaps and provide them with the education they deserve.

My Project

My students have switched between in-person and remote learning again and again since 3rd grade. Because of this pandemic disruption, they are missing crucial reading and writing skills that will serve as foundational knowledge for the rest of their school careers. Even more importantly, I am hoping to instill a love of reading that will serve them for the rest of their lives!

To assist them on their journey to life-long love of reading, every student in my class is always reading two books.

One book is a class novel that we read aloud as students follow along, and discuss and write about. Second, each student is in a "book club" grouping by reading level, in which they meet once a week to discuss their reading. I selected the books on my list because they are engaging stories, include diversity in topics, genres, and authors, and provide plenty of opportunities to practice literacy skills and discussion.

Please help give my students the opportunity to have amazing reading resources in the classroom that will help them fill essential literacy gaps and fuel a life-long love for reading!
