My Students

Do you remember what it was like to read a book that really made you look at your life and think? My students need this book to engage and excite them about reading, and in turn, writing their own stories.

My students are very dedicated and hard working.

They come from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes, but they don't let that stop them. They always have positive attitudes and are open to trying new things. I know that the science fiction book "The Giver" would capture their imaginations and inspire them to read more and dream big.

My Project

A novel study of "The Giver" would engage my students in a new and different way. Science fiction stories are interesting, because they pose the question "What if?" The main character in the story overcomes some amazing odds, and I think his story would inspire my students to work hard to overcome their own difficulties. Most importantly, it would encourage my students to be readers and later writers of their own science fiction stories.

These books and audio CD will really make a difference to my students learning, because they will be able to experience reading a book together as a class and engage in a shared reading experience that they will remember for years to come.

I remember reading "The Giver" when I was in middle school, and I am still thinking about its themes!
