My students are English Second Language (ESL) students. They come from all parts of the world. Some have faced obstacles that children should never have to face. They come with or without their families in search of the "American Dream". All they want is an opportunity to be successful. They don't have much and they never complain.
Regardless of what they have been through or what they may still be going through, they come to school day after day smiling--eager to learn.
They work hard and appreciate everything that is done for them and given to them. Although life has not been easy for them, school has become a place where new adventures begin.
My students come from different parts of the world with different academic needs and learning styles. The traditional text book or workbook cannot be used because it does not meet the needs of my students. Most of the resources they need are way below their grade level and need to be visual. The internet provides enormous amounts of free resources that can be printed. My students need toner cartridges and copy paper to print and copy resources to enhance their learning.
Imagine not understanding a word of English, but still able to understand an academic concept because of a picture graphic organizer or flip book--all printed from the internet.
These graphic organizers and other resources help my students understand concepts more easily than textbooks filled with English words they can not read.
