Fuel our Biology Classroom with Hands-on STEM Supplies

My students need Vernier sensors and dissection specimens so that they can participate in hands-on and technology based, relevant laboratory experiences.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In order to be competitive in STEM fields, my students need the opportunity to participate in designing their own labs using equipment relevant to industry. Further, access to dissection specimens will enable students to fully understand the anatomy and physiology of the brain.

My students come from a diverse set of backgrounds in each of my biology, AP biology, and anatomy and physiology classes.

I have the children of heart surgeons learning side by side children whose parents did not graduate from elementary school. Over half of our population is on free and reduced lunch and we have a variety of ethnicities that make our campus a rich place. My favorite thing about our school is that students from all walks of life get along and help each other to succeed. Students in my biology class are taking the class for a graduation requirement, while my anatomy and physiology and AP biology students are taking the classes as electives. My students are motivated and enjoy doing labs.

My Project

Students will be using pH and conductivity probes to connect with Vernier Labquest technology that we currently have. Because of monetary restrictions, we do not have a full set of probes to accompany our Labquests. Both the pH and conductivity probes can be used in a variety of different labs. Not only will my students use the probes, but other classes (including chemistry, environmental science, and earth science) will also be using the probes. I appreciate the versatility of the probes because they enable my students to design and conduct their own experiments and then use materials we currently have to make real-time graphs. This furthers my students' STEM abilities. My anatomy and physiology students will use sheep brains to understand how the brain works and identify the anatomical structures.

In order for students to be successful scientists, they need to have experiences that translate into the workforce.

By using probes to design their own experiments, students are applying their critical thinking skills and becoming adept in the field of STEM. Further, it is hard to learn anatomy without seeing it hands-on. Dissecting sheep brains will help my students internalize an understanding of brain physiology.
