My Students

My Students come from a low socio-economic background. Many have high anxiety over unmet basic needs like how they will eat, where they will stay, and who will be making decisions for them where they have no sense of control.

Hungry, sleep deprived, anxious students can become hopeful participants in school and their future decision making when they have basic needs met.

Often, students experience the same challenges adults do. The difference is that they have limited choice in trying to solve their own problems. Providing food provides solutions for one of their most stressful worries.

My Project

Classrooms are fast paced, busy environments that require stamina and focus. Kids need their basic needs met in order to be able to give their thoughts and efforts toward learning.

When students are hungry, they cannot learn because they are thinking about where their next meal or snack is coming from.

The items in this project are chosen to give my students options and variety to help reduce their hunger and their anxiety about how they will find food. Cheese crackers, chips, nuts, granola bars and cookies give these students a choice and allow them to get back to focusing on learning.
