Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 22 bright and eager elementary school students, ranging in age from 9 to 11 years old. They are bright and able, willing to learn and eager to work. They can get very antsy and are easily distracted. Some of my students enjoy working alone while others love working collaboratively with peers.
There are many different languages spoken by families in our urban district.
We service students in a Title I district. 80% or more of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Their needs are as diverse as they are. But all students need to feel challenged and successful, as well as safe and comfortable.
My Project
My students love to read. I want to help them understand that reading can be fun and is something that happens in many different forms.
StoryWorks and Super Science Magazines, from Scholastic, will help them read fiction and nonfiction on their level, and will be different and meaningful each time they read it.It will spark their imagination and build their background knowledge in many different areas.
Pricking their imagination is important because it increases motivation and creative thinking. Reading these magazines will help my students see that reading is for relevant purposes and continues to be important in current times, not just a long time ago.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
