My students are from a low income/high poverty inner city neighborhood. Most students are African-American and Latino. Some do not speak English. Others have learning disabilities. Quite a few have emotional and/or medical issues. For most, school is their happy place. It is where they are safe.
It is my goal to create a safe, healthy nurturing environment.
I want every child to receive the best possible healthcare they can when they come to my office. Keeping our children healthy allows them to learn more.
My Project
The first and foremost is to provide my students with serving healthy snacks to to provide good nutrition, supporting lifelong healthy eating habits, and helping to prevent costly and potentially-disabling diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.
As a school nurse I only have a limited supply of personal hygiene products therefore, on occasion, I am unable to supply them to the students.
My students come daily requesting menstrual products, and the younger children come to my office looking socks, pants, and underwear when they become soiled.
The office furniture will give me the opportunity to store all of the supplies for the students, while the chairs will give the students a place to sit.
