My Students

Teaching is something I love to do. I am a Special Education teacher for middle school students. I have the pleasure of working with many different students (many of whom were my students from previous years).

Many of my students come from a single-parent households where their parents must work long hours in order to make ends meet.

This past year our learning situation was very different from other years. My students were learning remotely and will be returning to the classroom this year.

My students live in the South Side of Chicago in a predominantly Spanish-speaking neighborhood that has been plagued with violence for many years. It is an area where their parents are able to afford an apartment, even if it means living in a neighborhood that is dangerous.

Some of my students have been exposed to different situations that have been traumatic, but they continue to strive for something better. What I love about my students is that even though they have been exposed to violence at such a young age, they still come to school with such a positive attitude and a desire to learn.

My Project

As a teacher, I am aware of how many of my students leave school only to arrive to an empty home. Their parents are working, trying to make ends meet while attempting to provide something to eat for their children. These snacks will help reduce some of the stress parents face. Having granola bars, oatmeal, and fruit snacks available in the classroom will allow my kids to take some snacks home daily. These snacks will also be available in the classroom for my kids to snack on when hunger strikes.

No child should have to worry about what they will eat when they go home, knowing that their options are extremely limited.

By providing snacks, my students will be able to ease their worries and know that there is something for them in the classroom.

This project will allow me to create take home goody bags that will have different snacks that students can eat when they are home. Each snack bag will have a variety of items and will be available to any student that needs to take a snack bag home.
