Fuel Fluency in First Grade: Elephant & Piggie Readers' Theater!

Help me give my students take-home-and-keep student copies of Elephant and Piggie Biggie books volumes 1 AND 2, headbands and plates for creating a hands-on costume for dramatic reading and role play, pig toys, ABC elephants, and more!

My Students

Students in the "highest poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.

My students have experienced adversity.

In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.

My Project

When students role play a character they love while reading their fluency practice is encouraged exponentially! The purpose of this project is to fuel first grade fluent readers. We will be distance learning to begin our 2020-2012 school year. One of the most successful projects that helped my first graders this spring as we transitioned to distance learning was the Elephant and Piggie Biggie book that was delivered to their homes.

When students read an engaging book with a partner their fluency improves, when that book has two characters the students love they really get into it; and when there are fun supports and rewards for their work - they will remember this as the first (and best) 100+ page book they ever read!

The excitement of readers' theater for first graders navigating online learning with their peers was fueled by the Elephant and Piggie Biggie Volume 1 for our 2019-2020 first grade students. I want to provide the same excitement and copies to keep for the upcoming cohort of emergent readers for the 2020-2021 school year. And I want to take it even further to make it fun and engaging for their families at home during distance reading!

This project will uplift our students from systemic educational racism by providing great materials for at home learning supported by educational research. My goal with this project is to increase their fluency, reading confidence, speed, engagement, sight words, and authentic love of reading.

Each student will receive their very own copies of Elephant and Piggie Biggie Volumes 1 and 2. These books are 100+ pages each as they each contain multiple stories. They will also each get a headband and pink and grey paper plates to create a costume. The other materials will support planning and become prizes!
