There’s a quote I heard that goes something like this: ”If you teach a child to grow a garden, you teach them to grow a future.” I believe that figuratively and literally. Just as education requires a strong foundation to build upon to develop an opportunity filled enriching future for each student, having the correct soil and garden substrate to grow a plant in develops a bountiful garden in years to come. Our students have planned and designed garden areas for us to grow pollinator friendly native plants along with herbs and plants with sensory appeal.
They are excited about getting outside to plant their gardens and make their designs become a reality.
Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, our original support for soil substrate and growing media has fallen through. We have beautiful courtyard gardens to improve and develop and the hard working middle school students ready to go to work. What we do not have is the funding anymore. Through this project we are not only including our students in bringing beauty and aesthetic appeal to our outdoor learning spaces, but building pride in our school through making it more inviting to humans and wildlife who visits . Kids need to learn outside the walls of their school room and they need to learn by doing. We can learn to appreciate our environment and the importance of pollinators and plants by getting our students out there ! We need the foundational soil and correct growing media to make a welcoming place for our places to grow in. Likewise, through this project, the students will have a welcoming and beautiful place to learn in.
