Your contribution has transformed this process from a standard daily routine into a true highlight of the school day.\r\n\r\nThe students are currently using these resources as immediate reinforcers during our afternoon \"Check-Out\" phase. Having rewards and reinforcers that motivate the kids is so important in building intrinsic motivation and a desire to grow in our students. Celebrating the small victories and encouraging growth is crucial, especially for middle-school aged children. My students were in awe to see the fully stocked CICO closet and witness the rewards they will have the opportunity to partake in if they meet their goals each day. It is another reminder that working hard and creating positive changes in our lives is worth it, both immediately and long-term. \r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we are using this momentum to help our students transition into \"self-managers.\" As students continue to meet their CICO goals, we will begin to increase expectations to encourage growth. As the students build the ability to manage their own academic and behavioral expectations, we are able to fade away tier 2 and 3 supports, transitioning the student back to tier 1 with new skills and techniques to monitor their academic success independently, which not only improves their middle school experience, but prepares them for high school and higher education. With this kind donation, we will also be able to support more students in the CICO program, encouraging growth for a larger population of our student body that may not have been reached without these resources.\r\n\r\nYour kind donation ensures that as they take these bigger steps toward independence, they have the consistent motivation they need to stay engaged. The science comics introduced my students to key science topics in a more engaging and accessible way. Through these books, students learned about different types of weather, how various forms of precipitation occur and the states of matter of water, a topic we just finished learning about in class. Because of this students were able to make stronger connections between what they learned in class already and what they were reading and seeing in the book. In addition, the books serve as good background knowledge to support future learning. The topics covered in the books are our next units when we study hail, precipitation, clouds, the rock cycle and plate tectonics. It allows students to now have background knowledge that they didn't necessarily have before and we won't get to cover in class.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom happens in a variety of formats including: whole group, small group and partners. Sometimes I read aloud and pause to ask questions and discuss ideas. This helps students understand how the words in a book are supposed to sound and where the pauses belong (fluency!). Other times I have kids pair up in partners or groups of three and read on their own. This builds up their confidence in reading as they are with people they are comfortable with. Other students help other students in these groups as they work on their pronunciations, fluency and even vocabulary. Lastly while students are reading independently I read with smaller groups to give them extra support. All students appreciated and enjoyed the books. Students were less engaged in reading were more interested then previously. The comic format, along with the visuals and graphics helps make the concepts easier to understand and keeps the students interested. Also the idea of science in the story kept them engaged in the concepts.
