From the Farm to the Table

My students need a tiller in order to understand the various steps needed to take our food from the farm to the table.

My Students

Do you remember reading a textbook and learning science? How do you truly understand the process if all you have is pictures in a book? It would be much more helpful to teach students about where our food comes from if they can actually take part in the process.

I teach at a 5A school on the outskirts on Houston, Texas.

This is a very urban area. This is also a low income district. This means my students do not get the experience other students might when it comes to agriculture classes. Some of my students have no idea where the food at the grocery store comes from. In my horticulture classes I would like to show them the entire process from planting the seeds to harvesting the vegetables to cooking them to feed their families. This will give them hands-on experience to learn about the different processes of plant science.

My Project

I believe the tiller will help me to not only be a better teacher, but also to help the students learn the topic. Part of my curriculum is teaching the process of plant growth. The first thing my students will need to learn how to do is prepare the ground for the garden. This is why I am requesting a tiller. The tiller will cultivate the soil and prepare it for planting. We will then be planting our seeds to hopefully have vegetables grow. We will then be sending the vegetables to the culinary classes to cook them in the kitchen.

I truly believe this project will help my students better understand and learn.

Students in this generation are proved to learn better by doing hands-on work. This is what I am trying to provide to my students. I want my students to leave my classroom having had so much fun they do not even realize they have also been learning.
