From STEM to STEAM, Finding the Creativity in Science
Help me give my students a better understanding of problem solving using basic principles of physics and sequencing, all while being creative in designing and building technology.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our students exhibit so much grit daily, in their academics and in their little lives in general. I teach to experience their lightbulb moments; their elation from, "I can't do it!" to "I did it! It works!" fuels me for the entire year. Our students are engaged in rigorous academic work in their classrooms, and they may master or show impressive growth in many areas, but they experience the most joy in learning when they can see the knowledge of math and science they have learned used in real time, with hands-on building kits. They will be able to apply their math and science mastery in combination with critical thinking skills as well as creativity in their designs.
It is important to me that my students become innovators in technology; that they learn to think outside the box whether designing, building, or applying technology.
I want my students to see their problem solving skills and unyielding determination as a strength. I want them to embrace the opportunity to use problem solving and critical thinking skills. Having a variety of technology, including Create-A-Chain Reaction STEM Kits and Coding Projects in Scratch, in the classroom will allow them to try a little bit of everything to see where their skill and interest would best fit into a world of technology. I want them to understand that creativity--although unmeasurable--is a valuable tool in making technology interesting and fun.
