My students need STEM project supplies such as pipe cleaners, tape, baking soda, storage containers, index cards, and craft sticks in order to have authentic, hands-on learning experiences around which we can build communication skills.

My Students
I teach at a Title I school in Alabama, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students live in a transitional neighborhood that is quickly being swallowed up by the proverbial "urban decay." There is also a rather large group of African refugee families in our neighborhood.
When asked what they'd like to be when they grow up, my students usually reply with one of following: "Walmart worker" (There is a Walmart Neighborhood Market nearby.); "work at McDonald's" (again, nearby); or "one of those people who just stays home and doesn't work." Many do not see careers such as doctor, engineer, teacher, or mechanic as realistic goals for themselves.
My Project
One personal goal I have for this year is to provide exciting, engaging experiences for my students that spark a love for learning. A sure-fire way to do that is to provide hands-on learning experiences. My students get SO excited about hands-on activities. Supplies from the project list such as paper plates, pipe cleaners, tape, baking soda, storage containers, index cards, and craft sticks will be used to make models and conduct simple science experiments during speech-language therapy. These hands-on activities will provide shared experiences through which students will improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills while learning more about science, engineering, technology, and math.
By donating to this project, you will give students with an identified disability the opportunity to have more authentic, meaningful learning experiences.
The "speech room" will become a "speech lab" where we experiment and learn together.
