My students need the listening center in order to listen to models of fluent reading and to have access to the text. The writing activities will develop a love for it.
I work with English Language learners, who are at various stages in their acquisition of English. My goal is to be able to improve my students language development. My greatest challenge is to break students off into smaller groups with engaging activities, while I differentiate instruction.
Most of my students are from first or second generation immigrant families.
They are very diverse not only with regards to their culture, but also when it comes to their individual needs and differences. Most of the students enjoy learning and are highly motivated. A few of them are a bit more challenging with their attention, focus, and attendance. They range in age from 5, 6, and 11 year olds. Our school is a public K-8 school in a large urban district. Most of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and many live in high poverty neighborhoods. Our school offers a variety of specialty classes such as art, music, theater arts, computer and gym, but our students require a lot of support with reading and writing. In addition to learning a new language my students still have the same challenges as everyone else.
My Project
I will use the listening center and the other resources in my classroom to create additional student friendly learning centers within the classroom. Students will work along with partners, and in small groups as they rotate to the different activities including the listening center, where they will be able to listen to models of fluent reading and talk about their work. The centers will reinforce skills already learned, and thus provide an opportunity to engage students at a self paced rate while I conduct a small guided reading and writing groups.
My students need to be able to engage in conversation on a regular basis in order to build academic language.
The resources will support students in this because it will provide students opportunities to be engaged in fun activities to support their English Language acquisition while they also help each other as partners and individually.
