From Seed to Plant

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Paradise Valley Unified School District where 86% percent of my students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend as well. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They are kind, sweet and want to learn. At times it is difficult for my students to maintain focus when they are challenged in their personal lives. I hope I create a classroom where, no matter what they face, my students will love school and become lifelong learners.

My Project

Part of the second grade curriculum is teaching the various life cycles of insects and plants. This project is geared to providing each student the opportunity to grow their own sunflower plant and watch that amazing process. Not only will they be directly involved in the nurturing process of their plant, but they will also get to experience the patience necessary when growing a living thing.

The resources I am requesting tie directly into teaching the concept of a plant cycle and also creating a keepsake for years to come.

I'm requesting plastic containers and soil so that each student can plant their own seed. I teach the Science portion to 3 classes which is why I am in need of more containers. I'm also requesting materials I'll need to create a Mother's Day card and a Sunflower stake to be put inside each plant with adjectives that describe their loved one. This is why I am requesting crayons and craft sticks. The chart paper will be used to directly teach each concept. Each poster will be displayed in the classroom to help promote learning and caring.

At the end of the project, each student will be able to take home their plant to their mother or loved one as a special gift for Mother's Day. I hope you are able to see the value of this project and the need.
