This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students attend school in the City of Chicago. Often it is difficult to find fresh produce especially for the local food pantries who are overwhelmed with requests at this time. Since we have a little free land outside our school, my students thought it could be planted with vegetables for those in need. My special education students reached out to the Cluster Program (students who require moderate to intensive supports) to include them in the project.

My students inquired about how they could supply food for the local food pantry.

They were interested in raising the food themselves. This way the people using the pantry could get fresh produce and the Cluster kids could help. The students want to plant fruit tress, but I told them one thing at a time!

We have been fortunate enough to have a landscape architect volunteer and design our space for the best possible use. Because a number of students use walkers and wheel chairs, our landscape architect designed the garden so everyone can participate! We will need seeds, potting soil, tools, and a place to store everything. The donation of a shed and the items listed will teach kids how to be self-sufficient through growing their food and further teach them how to care for others.
