Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, we do our best to provide an atmosphere that comes along and supports all kinds of learners. We have many students who are English Language Learners and more than half of the population is low income. My third-grade students are very enthusiastic learners! Third grade is really important as it is the first year they encounter some intense standardized testing.
Despite this difficult academic year, they amaze me with how they persevere and push through the challenges that come their way - all while empathizing with and encouraging their peers to do the same.
My Project
I am a second year teacher with a slowly growing library. I make a fair amount of trips to the local and school libraries to find the books I need to teach certain reading skills effectively. I do my best to teach with engaging books and thematic reading units to make the learning more exciting. I also do morning meetings once a week where I introduce my students to a life skill - using books which incorporate the specific character trait. My students have really enjoyed these books I read aloud to them and have requested to read them after lessons are finished. The problem is, they are rented, and not everyone gets the opportunity to read it before they are returned.
I want my students to have books with meaningful and relevant lessons so they grow up to be people with good character.
These books are best kept in classroom libraries so that they can be used and referenced year round as a constant reminder of the skills we learned and the way we should act or treat others.
Third grade is a very formative year of growing more independent, finding out who you are and who you want your friends to be. It's a year of intense testing, stress, and anxiety about passing tests and fitting in. I want to make sure my students have uplifting books with powerful messages, and also take on reading skills through exciting and FUN reading units. I want them to be equipped with the materials they need to feel as prepared as possible so they may find and achieve both academic success and personal growth into a person with great character.
