This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Picture books offer a unique and engaging way to introduce high school students to the elements of argumentative writing. Because picture books often tackle big ideas in a short format, students can quickly grasp the core components of an argument—like reasoning, counterclaims, and persuasive techniques—without getting overwhelmed by lengthy texts. With their concise storytelling, clear conflicts, and thought-provoking themes, these books provide accessible texts for students to analyze structure, identify claims, evaluate evidence, and explore various perspectives.
These stories serve as springboards for class discussions and mentor texts for modeling effective writing.
Using picture books also helps students practice forming their own arguments in response to meaningful, relatable topics. After reading and discussing a book, students can take a stance, back it up with evidence, and craft their own written arguments. This process builds critical thinking, strengthens their ability to organize ideas logically, and boosts confidence in their writing skills. Whether they're debating a character’s choices or connecting a story to real-world issues, students learn that arguments aren’t just for essays—they’re part of everyday thinking and communication. Picture books make that learning feel fresh, approachable, and fun.
