This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I are committed to their future success. Despite the anxiety that the Covid virus and its mutations brought and the doubts that many people had about our special education kids, our students continued to strive, thrived, and worked hard and were able to navigate technology through zoom-in classrooms.
Since being back in in-person classes last April 19, they continued to enjoy learning through hands-on activities and take pride and ownership of their own successes.
Our class recently started using an integrated approach called STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) to make connections between concepts we are learning and how we can apply them to the real world. STEAM is going to teach our students how to ask questions, think creatively, produce innovative solutions and apply what they've learned while having real fun.
My Project
Schools today require requires our students to not only have access to technology but to also know how to navigate and use them. I would like to teach them technology in small but attainable doses.
The digital camera and printer will not only afford my student to use technology and equipment used by their peers and professionals today.
My students will use the camera to make digital stories about themselves, their friends, things they like, their interests, culture, and community. They will also create their storyboard, finish and capture the student work that they will include in their living portfolio.
For some of our students who can't speak, this portfolio can also serve as their resume with proof of everything anyone needs to know about their experience, skills, and goals. For our other students, we can also use the camera to record and practice interviews for their culminating activity or project, their own Person Driven Plan. This project can really help them communicate effectively and improve their self-advocacy.
