From Paper to Purpose: Life Skills Through Sensory Seating

Help me give my students the ability to build vocational and life skills while creating comfy, sensory-friendly seating using shredded paper from their school job!

My Project

My students are incredible young adults with special needs who thrive when given opportunities to build real-world skills. They attend a life skills and vocational training program that helps them become more independent and confident as they prepare for adult life.

One of their daily responsibilities is shredding paper for staff around the school—a job they take pride in.

It builds fine motor skills, reinforces task focus, and fosters a sense of contribution. But right now, all that shredded paper just ends up in recycling.

We’d love to give our students a creative and functional way to repurpose that shredded paper by using it to stuff pillow and ottoman covers! This project will allow them to see a full circle—from task to tangible product.

We'll be purchasing durable, washable covers in various sizes and textures. Once filled, the pillows and ottomans will provide much-needed sensory seating and calming spaces for our students during breaks and social-emotional learning time.

This project merges work-based learning, recycling, creativity, and sensory support into one meaningful activity.

This project gives our students a sense of purpose beyond just completing a job—it lets them create something useful. It also supports their sensory needs, which helps them stay regulated and ready to learn.
