My Students
My students come from all over Philadelphia to attend classes at our high school. I work with students across grades 9-12 through my 10th grade English classes and AP Literature classes. The majority of our students come from poverty-stricken neighborhoods. Our school district and school have minimal funding resources and we barely have enough money in our budget to pay for necessities like books and paper.
My students are dedicated and hard-working young scholars intent on high achievement.
As a history-themed school in Pennsylvania, our core tenets are knowledge of history, democratic deliberation, and active citizenship. We work to achieve these tenets in our classroom through active engagement with texts and a focus on critical analysis of the world around us. We are working to become better writers and readers in order to become lifelong learners and active citizens in our world.
My Project
As part of our curriculum this year, my 10th-grade students will be reading Othello. This text requires a lot of perseverance as students dissect complex language and themes. As a reward for this work, I will be taking my highest performing students to see the work on stage as it was meant to be performed. After the play, students will have the opportunity to talk with performers and with the director to learn more about the process of taking a play from the page to the stage.
Students have limited opportunities to be rewarded for their hard and this experience will be one small way to change that.
This is a great way for them to take a text that they have worked so hard with and to see it come to life. This will also give students the opportunity to see the text as it was meant to be seen and to gain a deeper understanding of the timeless nature implicit in Shakespeare's texts.
