From Ordinary to Extraordinary With Flexible Seating

Help me give my students a classroom that is inviting, comfortable, and feels safe. I would like to add the flexible seating to help encourage positive behaviors and foster students unique needs.

My Students

I have an active group of students. They are lively and full of curiosity. For most students (especially those with certain conditions) it is near impossible for them to sit still, so why should they? Why can’t they have more flexible seating; Seating that provides a type of movement or accommodation for those students who just need to wiggle. I think with the extra freedom of movement students could greatly benefit. For my students, traditional seating hinders their ability to use the classroom in the ways they need to accomplish the learning goals I set for them as modern learners.

My Project

For my students, I believe traditional seating hinders their ability to use the classroom in the ways they need to accomplish the learning goals I set for them as modern learners. The classroom environment should mirror what students will encounter in their future careers, and collaboration, problem solving, and meaning making are at the forefront of most job descriptions. Standard desks situated in rows do not foster open communication and collaboration. Flexible seating gives students freedom of choice. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. It also has health benefits. The bottom line is that children need movement in their day.

Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength.

In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Flexible seating is about more than simply having a variety of different, fun seats in the classroom. It’s about utilizing student voice, creating buy-in, heightening collaborative learning, and prioritizing students’ needs concerning the environment in which they learn.
