Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the librarian at J.O. Davis Elementary School (K-5) located in Irving, Texas. The school population is approximately 900. Of those 900 students nearly 60% are economically disadvantaged. Davis is located in a mixed industrial/residential area of Irving. There are warehouses and small businesses, trailer parks, apartment buildings and individual homes. The project I would like to propose is a listening library for Kindergarten through 5th grade. Students could choose audio books to check out. Items in the listening library would be packaged as a kit. A kit would consist of a personal CD player, headphones, book and corresponding CD. The listening library would offer both fiction and nonfiction books with corresponding CDs at different reading levels to service the school's grades and reading abilities of its students. There are three great benefits of the program. First, studies have shown that students who have difficulty reading can usually listen and comprehend audio books two grades above their reading level. Second, as students follow along with the reader, they are likely to improve their reading proficiency and vocabulary. Third, as a student's reading proficiency improves their reading confidence soars and they begin to enjoy reading more and more for pleasure. The material necessary for the project is: 1.
