Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard working and resilient! Through all of the obstacles they face on a daily basis, my students come every morning ready to learn. My class started this year at an average of two grade levels behind in reading and math. I have several students receiving special education services, and most of my class are English language learners. Many come from single-parent homes and others don't have a home at all.
I may not be able to control the environment they are coming from, but I can control the environment they walk into every morning.
We work collectively to create and maintain a positive, welcoming, and safe space to learn. Our classroom is more than a community of learners, we truly are a family! I am so proud when I see my students protecting each other and lifting one another through kind words and encouragement. I do my best to provide them with everything I possibly can to create a rigorous, yet safe and loving space to learn.
My Project
At my campus, we teach behavior expectations weekly. On Monday, we do a lesson with our students on the behavior focus and then reinforce it throughout the week. I plan to adopt a similar approach to mindfulness. As a part of balanced literacy, I read a grade level appropriate picture book to my students every day. The books in my project will introduce students to a new concept each week, ranging from managing anger and frustration to being present and mindful in the moment. This approach is less heavy-handed and will be engaging to students. As opposed to telling them different strategies that they can use, students will learn about them through character experiences. I plan to use each book as part of our Mindful Monday lesson. This will introduce our mindfulness or social/emotional learning focus and allow students to practice it throughout the week.
This project will help to raise student achievement by incorporate mindfulness daily to allow students to self-reflect and refocus during stressful times like after lunch recess, before a test, or if there is a conflict in class.
The cushions will provide a means for students to spread out across the room and find the space to refocus themselves during mindfulness. It creates a physical boundary of personal space for each student to use and respect. The pinwheels will help to introduce students to different breathing exercises. As they exhale, they will blow the pinwheel in the initial integration of mindfulness. The Hoberman sphere will also model deep breathing.
These materials will allow me to replace detention with a time of meditation and reflection for my grade level. Not only is this project targeted at improving behavior, focus, and coping skills at school, it also provides tools for assisting students at home.
