This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The wonderful kindergarten students I teach come from a variety of different homes in a heavily diverse, low income community. We are a unique transitional-language school that has students from all over the world attending, and at times, our students are learning both English and at-grade level material! Due to the fact that there is not always a common language spoken among the students and myself, the use of hands-on manipulatives to identify letters and build words are so essential to their learning.

My students are my world, and I strive using all means possible to provide as much as I can for them in our classroom.

My Project

We spend all year long in kindergarten building upon the foundations for reading and writing. It starts with letter identification, and with the use of magnetic letters, my students will be able to practice and demonstrate their understanding of letter names and sounds. Moving forward, my students need to be able to identify, read, and spell sight words. This is so vital in building upon reading fluency skills later in first and second grade. This can be practiced using sight word puzzles during reading centers. Lastly, knowing how to read and write complete sentences allows us to apply everything we have learned; to come full circle! Utilizing everything the Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center encompasses, along with sentence strip pockets, will greatly enhance the learning that is taking place in our room.
