Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students include all the children of the school, Pre-K through 5th grade, and they love the library and learning. My students are diverse! They are mostly from low-income households, many speak Spanish or another language such as Arabic or Pashto.
My students are engaged and active learners who know that kindness counts!
Some of my students come from home knowing Social Emotional Learning skills such as compassion, empathy and self-regulation, but many do not and they learn those lessons here at school.
My Project
This collection of books will be added to our school library for use by students, teachers and parents to support our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, specifically in the area of Mindfulness. Some of them are engaging yoga stories so that I can incorporate movement into our library story times on occasion. I help lead "Mindfulness Monday" at assembly for all K-5 students on Monday mornings and I will use these books to share with students in this whole-community setting.
I want to use this collection of books to support students' understanding and experience with "Mindfulness" and nothing touches both the head and the heart more than books!
My goal is to include a mindfulness-related story time a couple of times per semester for each grade level in the school and have quality, engaging books in this area available for our school community in our library.
