My Students
Help us to "Dress for Success"! Culinary students need proper attire to succeed in the World of Work. Culinary aprons will help protect our school clothes and dress in the appropriate attire needed in the food industry workplace.
Our public high school of 850 students sits nestled in the heart of the Hawaiian islands.
It is a sprawling community of natural splendor boasting 70,000 acres that extends from a world famous volcano to fine black sand beaches. But beneath this beauty lies the truth of an impoverished community where the median family income is 35% below our state average with 72% of the school population receiving free or reduced meals.
My Project
We propose to re-establish our schools Food Science/Culinary Arts program which has sat empty and in disrepair for years now and offer healthy foods nutrition education courses that bases its curriculum around the scientifically proven healthy traditional Hawaiian diet as a dietary model to reduce obesity and the risk of diseases associated with it. 45% of our school population claims Native Hawaiian ancestry, many with cardio-metabolic health issues, including obesity. The program boasts a 6 bay kitchen with very limited supplies. Absent is any type of protective wear for our children to wear while they are learning to prepare and cook healthy meals.
You can help keep our children safe and their clothing from getting stained and soiled while they learn to prepare and cook healthy meals that they can later prepare and share with their ohana (family) at home!
