Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from Dade County, Miami, Florida. Our school is identified as a Title 1 school, with 98% of our students coming from a low economic background.
My current classroom is an inclusion classroom consisting of ESOL level 1 students as well as low performing at risk students.
At our school, students are required to work on a program that is tailored to their academic reading level. This program increases their reading level as students master each comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics strand. Students see their progress and are very excited to announce when they have advanced to the next level.
My students love working on their laptops. Many of my students who came to our country didn't have the means to buy laptops or were not exposed to computers at their schools.
My Project
Using technology in the classroom can enhance and prepare students for their future. This is why most schools expose children to the computer at an early age. However that is the ideal thinking, but as more and more children come to our schools from other countries, they walk into the classroom with limited English, or no computer skills. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is fortunate enough to have purchased a powerful tool called the I-Ready Diagnostic program. It is a program for reading as well as math. I-Ready pinpoints students current reading levels and tracks their progress. All the while, students practice using the keyboard.
Due to an increase of non-English speaking students recently entering my classroom, I am in need of laptop that can be shared among them.
The use of an additional laptop will facilitate the minutes that is required for the child to complete their expected usage time. Besides, the students love using touch screen. It gives them a feeling of empowerment.
