it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We're always looking for ways to make our school library more appealing to our 800+ kids. Good ideas don't have to be expensive. Here are four ideas that we've had. We've lumped them together into one Donors Choose project. They involve a dragon, kitchen timers, seat covers and Pikachu.
Quickly, before we outline those ideas, let us give you a rough picture of our school - and explain why our library needs financial support.
It caters to over 800 children. Around 650 of those kids qualify for free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. In other words, over 80% of our kids come from low-income households. About the same proportion of our children are first-generation Americans. Their parents are immigrants who work in the South Florida tourism industry. They clean, cook, and wait tables. Our parents work very hard to get by in the U.S. They don't have the time - or money! - to invest in the school PTA. When budget cuts hit our school, they hit it very hard. The school library manages to get by thanks to the tremendous generosity of our friends at Donors Choose.
My Project
So here are those 4 great ideas to improve the library. 1) We want to highlight the fairy tale section. Dewey places folk tales among non-fiction (!) books - so this is a section that young readers looking for good stories often pass over. Let's draw attention to our fairy tales by hanging a six-foot long dragon kite over them. It'll make a fantastic library sign. 2) Little kids, when they visit us to check out books, are told by their teachers to return to their classrooms in, say, 20 or 30 minutes. But they easily lose track of time. Not if we give each group a kitchen timer when they get to the library. It will ring when it is time for the group to go back to class. 3) Parents and grandparents like to visit the library before and after school. They often use our 3 rocking chairs. These chairs would be a lot more comfortable and attractive with some modest seat covers. 4) Thanks to Donors Choose, we just acquired some Pokemon books. The kids are gaga about them. May we have 16 more?
These 4 ideas are simple, but effective.
The dragon kite will fascinate the kids, and show them just where the fairy tales are. The timers will help the littluns (who can't read the clock faces on our walls) to go back to class at the right time. The seat covers will make our parents and grandparents feel more welcome. And those Pokemon books would thrill the kids no end. Pokemon books are so popular, they are never on our shelves. They are snatched up the minute that kids check them in!
