From DNR to DNA, Bring Genetics to Life for My Students!!
My students need 3D DNA, animal cell, and plant cell models.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen a piece of your DNA? Or inside your cells? Well, neither have my students - that's why DNA and cells are sometimes such an abstract concept for students.
My students work hard 24/7 not only to be good students but also to be good people.
They are all low-income minority students. They ask questions when they don't understand and they go the extra mile to do their very best. They're shooting to go to and through college and to be happy, productive men and women.
My Project
Cellular biology is often a difficult concept for students to grasp. There is so much you cannot see, even with a compound microscope. Cell models made out of clay, candy, and usual science class materials don't do the cell justice. DNA models made out of pipe cleaners and beads don't show the true beauty of a DNA molecule.
These models will be used frequently throughout the next unit entitled, "Why do humans have 75 trillion cells?" and throughout the year. I do an activity where the students go to different stations around the room to investigate parts of a cell and these models would be a great station to include. Students can see the intricate details between the different organelles and truly understand that if one organelle is missing or non-functioning then the whole cell is non-functioning. These models will be especially great for my students who have photographic memories and for my students that have learning disabilities and learn better with manipulatives.
Please make the abstract become real for my students.
I will keep these models for years and years and refer to them throughout the year in many lessons. I want my students to have a head start in college science classes, a little help on their mission to go to and through college.
