My classroom is for fourth and fifth grade students who have behavioral disabilities. The grades I teach range each year, typically between third and fifth grade. Many of my students enter my classroom with severe behaviors and I can proudly say that most learn how to control their behaviors by the end of the year.
What I love most about my students is that I get to teach them coping skills and strategies that they can then use throughout their lives.
My students are able to have rich conversations about how they can better themselves and then apply strategies in order to do so. For example, if students are off task, etc. I will tell them in the beginning of the year that that is unexpected behavior. By the end of the year, students are able to identify the unexpected behavior themselves. It's amazing to see how my students can self-reflect in such little time!
My Project
I would love to have novels in my classroom such as The BFG and The Chronicles of Narnia. By getting these novels for my classroom, my students will be exposed to various genres of text that they may have not been shown before. Several of my students have never read classics such as works by Roald Dahl or J.K. Rowling.
Due to my students being in my classroom for several years, my classroom library can become stale.
Having these new additions to my classroom library will help my students continue their love for reading while pushing them to continue to read at their instructional and independent levels!
