This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 400 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Ninety percent qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in academics, and business.

We promote college and career readiness through financial literacy programs with year-round experiences that include many work-based and service-learning opportunities for all our hard-working students including those economically disadvantaged and students with special needs.

In class, students are trained to run and operate their own business in the classroom. Students are treated as employees to their organization. There is a management team where students must compete for the top level positions and student employees are broken up into various departments such as sales and marketing, finance, graphic and design, human recourse, etc. As employees in department teams, the students work all year long running their business and competing in a simulated global market. Competitions and workshops throughout the year including the National Business Plan Competition. In order to gain competitive advantages they need to experience in real world practice. We need to turn the classroom into a fully operable office with 21st practices.

My Project

I want my classroom promote a culture of the learning environment by creating high-performing, project-based learning, in a simulated workplace that allows students to learn in ways that are beneficial to their unique needs. We have the space but lack the resources needed to turn our classroom into a fully function, multi-department-station, working office.

Many of the students are living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters.

Their families have very little to no extra money to fund school or classroom supplies.

By transforming our classroom into a student-led office, our young entrepreneurs will be able to competitively compete in hands on demonstrations and competitions amongst their peers; yielding more profits for their simulated companies. With more office resources and moveable stations comes more organization with strengthening knowledge, implementation of strategies, real-world connections, and multiple entry points that differentiate content, process, and products based upon the specific career readiness competencies they need to master to succeed in the 21st century.
