My Project
Vocational and Life Skills are essential to the education of my classroom. These students, all with intellectual disabilities, require explicit instruction and repeated practice in learning new skills. These learned skills are vital to their independence, happiness, and survival in "the real world."
To provide the job, math, and life skills learning opportunities, the students work and manage our coffee shop business.
Every morning, teachers and staff are able to order customized drinks to be made and delivered to their classroom by the employees of "Falcon Fuel."
On Fridays, the students sell baked items that they have made. This classroom business teaches students important vocational skills that can be used in many jobs including customer service, taking and following orders, handling money, and asking clarifying questions.
From their hard work in Falcon Fuel, the students earn a "pay check." They learn how to place money into savings, checking and cash. They use the money from the checking account to pay their weekly bill such as electric. They are required to balance their checkbook and learn how to write a check. The cash they earn is used in the classroom store for needed school supplies or treats.
Falcon Fuel is a wonderful opportunity for the children! The money the business earns pays for the field trips to give them authentic experiences in the community including how to work in an assembly line, how to pay your restaurant bill, how to tip the server, and how to navigate a new building in order to find the bathroom, and much more.
The supplies in this project allow us to continue the coffee shop that helps teach them how to be independent at their job and in life. Our goal is to prepare them for life after they graduate. These supplies help us reach that goal.
