Junior high students are fun! They are at an age where they are still excited to learn, are willing to share their ideas, and aren't afraid to be a little goofy. I love that they roll into class with a smile on their face every day and are always pumped for a fresh lesson.
My students live in rural Wyoming where recent economic woes and COVID-19 have negatively affected their home lives and our school.
Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches and many more fail to complete the paperwork. Despite this fact, they are dedicated to their work and dream of careers in a wide range of fields. My students are some of the most wonderfully imaginative, inquisitive, and motivated learners I have encountered.
My Project
This project will benefit students in my building who have been identified as having substantial gaps in their reading ability and need a targeted, intensive reading intervention to get their skills back on track. Research clearly indicates that students who do not read at grade level by third grade will continue to read below grade level, experience adverse academic experiences, and are four times more likely to drop out of school (Annie E. Casey Foundation).
The fact that my 7th and 8th-grade students' reading comprehension is well below grade level indicates that they are at risk of not completing their education and will undoubtedly experience difficulty in the majority of their courses.
A subscription to AKJ's Reading Plus will allow me to provide a structured program that is adaptive to my student's individuals levels and needs. I believe in my own skills as a teacher, but I also know that my students' skill deficits are going to require a very intensive approach in order to move them to proficiency in the short time period they have left in school.
Please help me ensure that my students have the best shot at a successful future as possible. If you can read, and read well, you can do anything. If you can't read, you are destined to struggle. Let's move my students from can't read to can't stop reading!
