From Buttons to Quilts; Teaching Students They Can Succeed.

My students need a sewing machine and thread to learn quilting in our after school sewing class. This machine would make that possible. Self motivation and confidence are learned as they sew!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning by doing is the most effective way to insure students have a true ability to complete a project independently. I work at a Title I School at which 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

The students are truly excited about learning to sew and show off what they make each year during our after school work times.

The students want to become self-sufficient and work hard to learn to sew during an after-school group in which several of the teachers help them learn to sew. They have made pillowcases, pajama bottoms, pillows, and more. They even exhibited some of their work at the county fair!

Many of the families are struggling financially and it really helps when the students can sew on buttons and hem pants or repair seams that have come open on their coats.

My Project

Students in low-income environments often feel as if they have little control over what happens in their lives. We can't fix everything, but we can show them they can take responsibility for parts of their lives and gain control. For the past six years, we have been teaching an after school sewing class. The students start by learning to sew on buttons and hem pants. This gives them power over their school uniform mishaps.

Once they see that they can manage the hem, buttons, and small tears on their uniforms they are empowered to take care of themselves.

We have reached the point where students are ready to take on the task of learning to quilt. This will give them practice in measurement and geometry. More importantly, they will learn that they can make blankets for the new baby or others in the family cheaply by using scraps from outgrown clothes. They will learn that they can improve their lives and the lives of those around them if they are willing to take control of what they do each day. My goal is to give them the chance to see that they can be successful, they can overcome what life has dealt them, and they can depend on themselves which is why I'm requesting an embroidery machine and thread.
