Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever struggled with concepts that others found so simple? This is a problem some of my students are facing each day.
I teach 2nd grade to a group of bright and motivated students.
Many of them are working at or above grade level in math. Others struggle with math concepts and it just hasn't clicked for them yet. During math lessons I'll overhear students say to each other, "You don't know how to solve that problem? That's so easy!" They don't realize their confidence is having a harmful impact on the self-esteem of others.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are math center activities that will be used to reinforce skills already taught in class. These centers are a great way for students to work together and share their strategies for problem solving. It will be a place where students will work together and learn from each other. Students learning from their peers can help combat bullying. I want these materials to help change the conversation from, "You don't know that?" to "Here, let me show you!" Not only will the struggling students gain confidence but the confident students will gain a sense of pride from sharing their knowledge.
I am requesting the book "Bullying in Schools" to help students recognize bullying behavior and how to prevent it. Students will learn that even unintentional bullying is still very harmful. I think this book will open up conversations in the classroom on what it means to be a friend to others.
You can help make this a win/win situation for my students.
This project will assist in teaching my students character skills that will last a lifetime. Please help my students reach the goal of a "bully-free zone" at school.
